Production Log - 17th December 2013

In the past 2 lessons of media I have continued to work on my draft for my magazine. I have been using Indesign to create the layout of my magazine as well as using photoshop to edit the photo for my front cover. I have decided to use a close up shot of Charlotte for my front cover as this looks the most suitable for my genre of magazine. Once I had edited the photo in photoshop I put the image on my magazine in InDesign.

Production Log - 10th December 2013

I have started to creatmy plan for my magazine using InDesign. Whilst making it I have included some of the text such as my magazine name, price, and pull quotes. Where I will have my images I have placed different colour boxes showing me that  a picture will be going here. I have used text boxes and put them in the correct places for where I will have my text, and also put the text in columns where I will have these. I will continue working on this in my lessons and will begin to add my artcles and pictures which I will edit using photoshop.

Production Log - Thurday 5th Decemeber

Yesterday I completed my photo-shoot. overall I think this went really well and I was able to get a wide range of different shots of my models for my magazine. I made sure that when I was taking the photos I took them portrait and also ensured the camera focuses properly. When doing my photo-shoot I found that the different outfits and poses worked really well allowing me to now have a wide range of shots to choose for my magazine. I also found that my main prop being the bubbles worked really well and gave me some really effective photos that would make my magazine look interesting to the reader. Whilst doing my photo-shoot I got someone to take a few photos of me taking the pictures of my models and also a couple of videos in which this shows that all the photos have been taken by me.

Production Log - Tuesday 3rd December

I have completed all my sketches for my magazine. When I come to make it on InDesign I will follow these sketches in order to make sure that my magazine looks professional and structured. I have booked in my photo-shoot which I will complete tomorrow.

Sketches

These are the sketches of my magazine. I will follow this lay out for my magazine in order to keep my magazine looking structured and professional. I believe that by doing these sketches for my magazine it will make me a lot more organsied when I come to make the magazine. This is because I would already have an initial idea of what I wanted to do for the magazine and therefore when designing it I would not have to start right from the beginning. Within these sketches I have shown each of the pages that will be included in my magazine and highlighted exactly what will be on the pages such as images, text and the article.

Production Log - 27th November 2013

I have written my article draft, in which I have decided to do an interview with my artist. I then came up with my pull quotes, headlines and sub-headings which I would use for this article on my double page spread. I came up with a range of different ideas and wrote about each of my decisions. I put all my information into a video which I created, uploaded to YouTube and embedded onto my blog.

Pull Quote, Headlines and Sub-Headings

Article Draft

In this post I have written a draft article for my magazine. This is only a draft and not the final article which will be included in my magazine. I believe that by drafting the article it will ensure that my magazine is professional and sounds like it has been written by a professional journalist. By drafting the article it measn i will be going back to it and redrafting until the final article is complete. I will be going back to this draft and improving it to make sure it is as high standard as I wish for it for be.

Production Log - 22nd November 2013

In the past few lessons of media I have focused on collecting the results from my survey and also location ideas. Firstly by collecting the results from my survey that I got a range of people to fill out, this enabled me to be able to see how I should make my magazine and what I should include to make it appeal to as many people as possible. My next task I completed was my location ideas. By doing this it meant that I had to find some suitable places where I could take pictures to use for my magazine. I found a range if locations such as outside within the trees, the stage, and against a wall. I thought that these locations would be suitable as they relate for the theme of my magazine being pop. I would also be able to collect a range of different camera shots in these locations which would look interesting for the audience and would also send out in my magazine showing who my models really are.

Location Idea's

For part of my planning I have looked at the possible locations where I could shoot images for my magazine. I have thought about each of the locations in depth in order to make the best decision about where I should shot the magazine. I have two locations which are mostly outside in the school location and one which is in the school hall. From doing this planning task and looking at the possible areas where I could shoot, I have also thought about shooting in the studio instead of the school hall as this would give me a similar idea to the school hall however it could look more professional.

Equipment

Within this prezi I have looked at the range of different equipment which I could be potentially using during the production of my music magazine. For each of the equipment peices which I have highlighted in the prezi I have explained what the equipment is and how I would be using this when making my magazine. Completing this task it has allowed me to throughly think about how I will be using the equipment so that when I come to completing my photoshoot I will know exactly what equipment I need and the reasons why I need it. I have also explained the softwares on the computer which I will be using when making the magazine. This has given me a much more in depth understanding of the softwares as well as understanding how I will be using them.

Production Log – 15th November 2013

I have collected a range of images which I thought could be suitable images to try to recreate for my magazine. I collected 3 images which I could use for the front cover and 3 which I could use for my double page spread. I made a video which I uploaded to YouTube and then embedded onto my blog. I wrote about each of my image choices and the reasons for which I thought each one would be suitable for my magazine. By doing this it has given me a much wider idea of the types of images I would like to try to recreate for my magazine.

Production Log - 14th November

Production Log – 14th November 2013

I have decided that for my photo-shoot I will be using Charlotte, Beth and Grace. To ensure they have agreed to take part in my photo-shoot I have printed 3 model release forms and got each of my models to sign them. This means that they are willing to take part and be featured in my magazine.

Model Release

This is my model release. I have filled out this form for all 3 of my models and have got each model to sign and agree to take part in my media photo-shoot. I have had to complete a model release form in order to publish my model on my magazine. it is a legal releaase in which is signed by the model granting the permission to allow the model to be shown. Without completing a model release form this could result in civil liability for the company who publishes the magazine. In addition by getting my model to fill out a model release form this means that I am able to represent my model in the required way in which I am wanting to represent her with her agreement.

The first type of model release that there are is the adult release in which this is the most commonly refered to one. This release is normally intended for use by models over the age of majority. The next type is the minor release this is the model realease which is referring to the model in third person whichr requires the signatire from the parent or other guardian . If not signed by one of these people it has no legal protection to the publisher. The final release is the group rlease in which this is the modified version to the adult release which includes additional information for when more than one model is required.

Promotion Methods

In order to promote my magazine I had to think about the different ways that magazines can be promoted. Completing this task I am now fully aware of how the magazines are promoted and I am able to see how these methods could be used to promote my magazine. I have explained each of the methods both traditional ways and modern ways in detail in order to gain and show full understanding of the promotion method and explained how the methods would be suitable for the audience.

Production Log - 11th November 2013

Production Log – 11th November 2013
In the past few lessons on media I have worked on my props and costumes and also cover lines. Firstly I worked on the cover lines that I could possibly use for my magazine. I presented this task within a prezi document as this would allow me to clearly structure my information. I thought of a range of possible cover lines which I could use for my magazine including things relating to the music industry, fashion, and makeup and as well celebrity gossip. I chose the cover lines I did because I thought they would be suitable for a teenage magazine. I also looked at other pop magazine examples of cover lines, for example by looking at the top of the pops magazine. I saw that on this magazine they used a range of cover lines not just to do with music but also fashion and gossip, therefore I decided it would be good to choose a range of possible cover lines.

secondly I worked on the props and costumes task. This required me decided the way in which I would be dressing my models for my photo-shoot and any of the props that would be used. As I am creating a pop magazine I thought it would be most suitable to make it fun and interesting for the target audience. Therefore when deciding costumes I decided that things such as dresses and skirts would be suitable as these are very girly items and this is a girl aimed magazine. In addition I decided to use fun props which would make the magazine more fun for the audience to look at. I decided that one of my props would be balloons as this could make my photos very interesting and different ensuring that it is not boring to look at.

Contents Ideas

I have created a prezi, in which I have shown my ideas for my contents page. I already had some idea of how I wanted to have my contents page including the headings and the things that I wanted to include, to make it appeal to the readers and make them want to buy the magazine. I have included the different sections for what I would want to include, such as exclusives and gossip. I have decided to include the features which I have chosen as I thought these would be suitable things which would be seen in a pop magazine. It would also allow my magazine to look professional and interesting for the readers.

Props And Costumes

This slide share I have gained a wider idea of the sort of props and costumes which I will be using for my photo-shoot. By doing this it has helped me decide how I should present my models to make them suit the genre of pop music. I collected my images from a range of webpages including google, and other fashion websites. I wanted to make my models to be presented as artists which are fun and interesting therefore the clothes and props I have chosen are suitable as it will make it clear to the audience how they are presenting themselves and also what genre my magazine is. It was important to do this task so when I come to do my photo-shoot I know exactly how to present my models which will allow me to work quicker and get the shoot done first time.

Cover Lines

In this task I thought of some inital ideas for my cover lines. I came up with a range of inital ideas which could be used for cover lines on the front cover of my magazine. I have also written a detailed explaination of why I have chosen the particular cover lines that I have.

Production Log – 7th November 2013

Production Log – 7th November 2013

In the past few lessons on media I have carried on working through the research tasks. I firstly worked on the representation of pop artists and how they want to present themselves for the audience. I focused on the artists that would be similar to the ones I am featuring in my magazine such as Justin Bieber and Jessie J where both have a teenage fan base. When doing this I found that the pop genre has become more popular and the artists focus mainly on representing themselves so that the audience/fans would be interested and attracted to how they look. My first example as Justin Bieber I found that he likes to represent himself in a way which teenage girls would find appealing. This includes the way he dresses. I also found when researching about Jessie J that she represents herself in a very girly way which would be appealing for the audience. She also represents herself in a stylish way which would allow the girls to be inspired by her fashion and copy the way she dresses. By doing this task it will help me when I come to do my photo-shoot for my magazine. This is because it will help me to decide how to style my models including fashion, hair and makeup as well as the way I should position them in front of the camera to make the audience interested in the artists and want to read the magazine.

The most recent thing I have worked on is the new media topic for the research of my coursework. This task required me to look at the different types of media and social networks sites such as Facebook and twitter. I focussed on the social networking sites, imaging sites, sound and phone apps. I choose the apps / webpages that I did because these are very popular and would help me to gain popularity for my magazine. I also decided that these websites allow people to keep in touch with all the latest news from the magazine which would be a good promotion method for my magazine.

Representation Of Pop Artists

Within this prezi I have thought carefully about the rpresentation of pop artists. By doing this research it has allowed me to see exactly how pop artists represent themseleves so that when creating my own magazine I know exactly how Beth should portray herself to the audience to be seen as a "typical" pop artist.

Production Log - 29/10/13

Production Log – 29th October 2013
In the past week of media I have been focusing on the research section of my coursework. This has involved researching about the different colour connotations. By doing this task it has helped I to gain knowledge about the different colours and what they symbolise which is helpful for me as I now know what colours would be best to use for my magazine. Furthermore when doing this piece of work I ensured that I put as much detail as possible into what I wrote about each of the colours. As I now know more about what colours symbolise and represented I have decided that it would be best if I was to use bright colours that symbolise happy and appealing things.

Production Log - 22/10/13

Production Log - 22nd October 2013
In the past week of media I have been working on my research and planning for my coursework. I have created a survey which I will be getting people to fill out within the next few lessons. I used a range of questions on this which will help me when I make my magazine. I then researched on the different mast heads. I got a range of popular mastheads which will has helped me to see how they have been designed and the different font types. Furthermore by doing this it will help me when I come to make my masthead as I would have been able to see the standard I would have to make it so that it looks as professional as possible. After doing this I researched more into the names and what the magazine suggests. Also in this research task I found out about the institution which has been used and why this has been used. As one of my tasks I researched the different institutions. I found out about the institution and what magazines have been produced from the institution. When I come to do my proposal I included about my target audience, my genre, and other key things such as the institution that I would use. The most recent task I have completed is the analysis of 3 existing double page spreads. By doing this it has allowed me to see the typical layout of a double page spread and will allow me to know how best to make my double page spread when I come to make it.

Existing Magazine Names

Part of my research involved finding out about existing magazine names. I found this very helpful for thinking about my magazine as I realised that all the names of the magazines were very catchy. I also looked at the designs for the names and I realised that they were all very bright and stood out. I believe I will be able to use what I have learnt from looking at these existing names to create a catchy name for my own magazine.

Double Page Spread's Analysis

This shows 3 music magazine double page spread which I have analysed. This has allowed me to see how I should design my double page spreads to make them appeal to my target audience as much as possible and also to make my magazine look as profession as possible. I have also got to see how the codes and conventions of a double page spread are structured on the page and this will help me when I make my magazine.

Proposal

This is my proposal which I made for my magazine. In this proposal I have gone into detail about what my magazine will be like including genre. I have also talked about my target audience and how I will make my magazine suitable for this audience. Furthermore  I have spoke about the institutions I would use to publish my magazine and my reasons for these decisions.

Institutions

As part of my research for the course I was able to find out about the different institutions. this was very interesting and gave me a lot more knowledge about the institutions and what they do. It also helped me think of who a suitable institution would be for my magazine.

Magazine Survey

I have included in my research a survey in which will help me to find out more about what the market prefer with magazines and will help me decide how I should create my magazine when I come to make it. I included questions about the different genres, how often people read magazines, how much roughly they spend on a magazine and other questions which will help me when I make my magazine.

Production Log - 15/10/13

Production Log - 15th October 2013

In the past few weeks of media I have created a mood board. By creating this it enabled me to gain more knowlegde about teenagers and the typical things that they are interested in. It also gave me a wider idea of the sort of things which I could include in my magazine and will help me decide what to include in my magazine. As well as gaining knowledge it will also help me to be able to design a more interesting and appealing magazine. In my moodboard I included images such as make-up, nail varnish and fashion as these are some of the main things which teenage girls are into. I also included other images such as sweets, shops and other things such as phones and music.

I have also learn't about the codes and conventions of a music magazine. This included writing about the codes and conventions of a contents page and double page spread. I also learn't about the codes and conventions of a front cover and I uploaded all my work onto by blog by using scribd. By learning about the codes and conventions of a music magazine this has allowed me to see what I need to include in my magazine to make it look as professional and appealing as possible.

Once I had learnt about the typical codes and conventions I then went on to do an analysis of 3 front covers of pop music magazines and 3 contents pages. When analysising the front covers I made sure  I put a lot a lot of detail into my analysis. This included writing about the masthead, selllines, images and how the codes and conventions are incorperated into the magazine. I also went into detail about the colours used and how the front cover had been designed to appeal to the target audience. When analysing the contents pages I made sure to write about how they had made the magazine appealing to the target audience by the language they had used and colour schemes. I also analysied the images that had been used and the different sections of the magazine. By doing this analysis it has helped me gain more knowledge on how I should make my magazine and what I shoukld include to make it appeal to teenage girls and make it suitable for the theme of pop.

The most recent thing I have done is come up with a variety of masthead names. I come up with a variety of names which I thought may be suitable for my magazine. However when I came to look back on these names I saw that some of them may not be suitable for my magazine. This is because I thought that names such as 'pop' would be too boring for my magazine and it would not make people want to buy the magazine. Therefore I expanded on this and came up with more complex names such as 'simply pop' and 'love pop'. I decided to make all my masthead ideas relate to the theme of pop music and I made sure that they would appeal to the target audience of teenage girls. Once I had come up with a wide variety of names I decided to create some of them in photoshop. This gave me an idea of different fonts which I could use and the different colours which would allow it to appeal to my target audience. Seen as my magazine is going to be a pop magazine I did not use fonts which could be related to other genres such as rock by using gothic type fonts. I decided that it would be best to use girly colours such as pinks, purples, and light blues as these would appeal to girl. Furthermore I thought that black would be a good colour to use as it makes the masthead stand out against the background colour and would make it catch the readers eye.

Name Idea's

As part of my planning I came up with a range of different names that I could use for my magazine. When I started thinking of names for the magazine I thought f lots of different possible names and then expanded on these to see the different names I could achieve by compounding different names. When I had a large variety of possible names I chose the best ons and designed them in Photoshop. This allowed me to come up with the best possible name for my magazine rather than just using one and then using that.

Front Cover Analysis

This shows 3 music magazines which I have analysed. By doing this it has allowed me to see the different features that I need to include in my magazine when I make it. By looking at a range of music magazine front covers it has made me want to produce a similar magazine cover in which it would be a high standard like the ones that I have looked at.

Codes and Conventions - Contents Page

When I was looking for the codes and conventions I made sure to find all the main features which are included in a typical music magazine. This will allow me to create a magazine to the best standard and make it look as professional and appealing as I can. By doing this task it will help me when I come to make my magazine as I will be able to check I have included to the right things I need to include.

Tuesday 1 October 2013

Codes And Conventions - Double Page Spread

This shows the codes and conventions of a double page spread in a magazine. When I was finding out the codes and conventions I made sure I was looking specifically for the same genre as mine. This will help me as when I come to make my magazine it will help me to know what I should include in my work. It will also allow me to create a better and more professional looking magazine from doing this.

Mood Board

Here I have created a mood board for my target audience. By creating a mood board it gave me a much better understanding of who my audience are, and the types of things that they like. In addition to this it will help me when creating my magazine as I would have a much better understanding of the interests of the audience and therefore would be able to incorporate this into the magazine. Not only did I get images of the things that the audience like, I wrote a thorough analysis of why I had chosen particular images, and given a detailed explanation of who the audience are so that when I go onto creating my magazine I know exactly who I am targeting the magazine to.

Preliminary Task Analysis Video

This video which I have made highlights an analysis of my preliminary task. In this video I have clearly explained what I done throughout the task and how I achieved the final magazine. This allowed me to look back on my work and think about what I done well and what I didn't do so well. not only this but by completing an analysis of my preliminary task I was able to see what didn't go too well so that when I came to make my real magazine I was able to ensure that I did not make these mistakes again.

Preliminary Task Evaluation - 24th September

Evaluation - 24th September

When I began making my magazine for the preliminary task I thought about a suitable colour scheme and also suitable fonts and titles. I gave my magazine the name of Haydon News as I thought this puts across clearly to the audience what the magazine is about and who the magazine is aimed at. Furthermore I used a bold font for the title and had the letters in a black and uppercase font. This made it stand out clearly to the audience so they could clearly see the name of the magazine. I also made sure that the name of the magazine was the biggest text on the page so that it catches the buyer’s attention and will make them want to buy the magazine. I did not only make sure that it was just the name of my magazine that was clear to read but I made sure that the other text on the front cover was of suitable fonts and colours to make it appeal to the audience. I placed the cell lines around the edge of the magazine so that the image is clearly in the middle of the page and catches the reader’s attention and makes them want to carry on reading the magazine. When I was thinking about the image I wanted to use for the front cover of my magazine I thought about the purpose and target audience for the magazine and then decided on the image I used for my front cover. I thought this was a suitable image choice as it is a close up image which is more suitable than a long distance shot for the front cover. Also the image being of a Haydon students makes it become clear to the audience that the magazine is aimed at Haydon pupils. I also included the price of the magazine on the front cover to allow the buyer’s to see how much the magazine costs. However once I had created my preliminary task I realised had not included some of the main features that are on a magazine such as the barcode and date, however I know for the next task that I need to include these.

When creating my contents page I used the same font for the heading as what I used for the name of the magazine on the front cover. I used to the same font to keep it too the same style so that it doesn’t look like two different magazines. I kept the background white for my contents age as I thought that this would be the most suitable colour as it would make the text and images stand out and the purpose of the contents page is to find out what is in the magazine. When creating the text for what is included in the magazine I made this a suitable font which is clear and easy to read so that the readers do not get distracted. Also if I had used an unclear font for the contents page, the audience would not want to read the magazine as they would not know what is included inside. When I was creating this I thought about the target audience being Haydon students and this helped me to decide what images would be best to use on my contents page. I then decided that it would be a good idea to use a range of different images. I choose to use an image of a student, and then two of the most recent images of the school to give the pupils an idea of what is happening at the school.

To make the magazine I created better I would have added more detail and added more of the key features of a magazine such as the barcode. I also would have shown more skills of using the software to make my work look more appealing and more professional. I also would have used a wider range of camera shots and camera angles to make it more interesting for the audience to look at.

Preliminary Task Magazine - 24th September

Preliminary Task - Sketches

These are my sketches for my preliminary task. I have drawn out roughly how I want my magazine to look when I make it including the front cover and the contents page. I have included all the main things which I thought needed to be included in my magazine front cover / contents page.

By doing these sketches I now have a much better understanding of how I want the magazine to look. Not only this but it now means that when I go onto creating the magazine I will know where to start rather than not having any ideas.

Preliminary Task

Media Studies
Preliminary Task Log - 18th September 2013

Over the past two weeks I have gained information on how to create the preliminary task of making a front cover and a contents page for a school magazine. In our first lesson we looked at previous preliminary tasks created by other students and other students final task completed. We looked through a range of student’s blogs to see what they had created for their preliminary task which enabled me to gain knowledge on what I had to do for the preliminary task and also gave me ideas of designs of which I could use for the task. We also discussed as a class what each preliminary task had which makes it appeal to the target audience being school children and what they had included that did work so well. This allowed me to know what I should and what I shouldn’t include in my magazine to make it appeal to as many people as possible.  When looking at these examples it helped me to decide what sort of images I would want to use for my front cover and contents slide. We also looked at the students work from their preliminary task to the final piece of work they created. This enabled us to see how much the students improve over the year of studying media and how you can create the most professional looking magazines. It also gave us an insight to what we will be doing throughout the year and what work we will have to complete.

In the next lesson we went outside of the classroom in groups of 3 to take some pictures which we would be using for the preliminary task. We took a range of pictures around different locations of the school, to ensure we had enough pictures to choose from when making our cover and contents page. We spoke about the images and discussed which ones would be good to use to ensure that the cover appeals to as many people as possible. I also made sure I had a range of images around different locations of the school including outside buildings, inside the school and on the school field, to ensure that my front cover and contents page did not include any of the same images as this may have made it become boring and unappealing to the audience.

In the following lesson I began to draw out my preliminary task onto paper drawing out where the images and text would go. By drawing it out it helped me get an idea of what it would look like when I had finished it on the computer. Firstly I drew out the front cover. When I was drawing this I made sure that I included all the main features which you see on the front of a magazine. This included the headline which I made big and bold so that it stood out, the price, date and other key features such as the images and what will be included in my magazine. I decided to use a close up image on the front of my magazine of a person as this would suit the target market of being the students at school and would also make it a lot easier to tell that it is aimed at the students at Haydon. I then went on to drawing out my contents slide. I made sure I had the heading ‘contents’ at the top of my page and then a few pictures and then what is included on each page in my magazine. I made sure that when I drew out my contents page that it was not too over crowded with text and images.

In the next lesson I began to make my magazine cover and contents page on the computer. I began by making my front cover. Firstly I found the image I wanted to use on the computer and placed it in, then positioned it and resized it so it fit correctly filling up the whole page. I then added the name of the magazine at the top of the page and made the font in upper case and in bold so that it would stand out. I made sure that the font suited the purpose of the magazine and also so that it appeals to the students and will make them want to read it. I added onto the front cover some of the main stories which would be included in the magazine and changed each one so they were different colours and font styles. By making them different font styles it made it look brighter and more appealing to the target market. Finally I added the date, and price to my front cover to make it look more professional. I then went on to make my contents page. This involved finding 3 suitable pictures to have on my contents page and adding in text to allow the audience to see what is included in the article. I firstly added the title at the top saying ‘contents’. I made this the same style as the title of the name of the magazine on the front cover. By doing this is makes it look more professional and more realistic. I then decided that I would use two images of the school one of the front building and one of the building work, and then one image of a Haydon student. The range of images will allow people to see what will be included in the magazine and make it look more appealing.
